FAQs
Why is Jiu Jitsu considered the “Gentle Art?”
Unlike other forms of martial arts that focus on punching the air (or small pieces of balsawood) and making loud noises, Jiu Jitsu focuses on the practical application of leverage. By using correct body mechanics, Jiu Jitsu allows you to subdue significantly larger opponents with various holds, chokes, and throws.
What type of people train Jiu Jitsu at High Ground?
Our purpose is to welcome everyone into our family and to shepherd them in their lifelong Jiu Jitsu journey. Our members are keenly focused on the safety of others first and foremost. You will find unbelievably talented students and instructors alike, who have a strong desire to help introduce Jiu Jitsu to new students.
I signed up for a trial class, what do I need to bring with me on Day 1?
The most important thing a new student can bring is a playful spirit. Research shows that we learn best while we play. No need for tough guy attitudes or “me-first” egos. Other helpful hints:
· We have clean guest GIs if you need one to borrow for a class
· Bring a bottle of water
· Come clean and with trimmed finger and toenails
· Wear athletic clothing and bring a pair of slides or flip flops
I am a woman; do I train with men?
Jiu Jitsu is the only martial art that gives the small guy an upper hand. As most women are smaller than most men, Jiu Jitsu would be the very best martial art for a women to practice. No, we do not require men and women to roll together. Yes, we do have a women’s only open mat. Yes, we do encourage everyone of all sizes, shapes, sexes, and whatever else makes us different to roll together. Why? Because we don’t get to choose who confronts us in the real world.
Is Jiu Jitsu good for kids?
Jiu Jitsu is the very best martial art for a child. Would you rather your child punch or kick someone because they are scared or angry? OR, be confident enough to stand tall, respectfully state their position, and then use leverage to subdue the conflict? Long story short, Jiu Jiutsu allows for descalation without the use of violence.
What is the difference between MMA and Jiu Jitsu?
MMA that you see on the UFC looks a lot like Jiu Jitsu for a good reason. Jiu Jitsu is the foundation the best fighters in the world use to build their game. We do not strike, punch or kick in Jiu Jitsu.
I have a friend who’s 7 yr old child is a black belt in karate, is that the same thing?
Not even close. We are not aware of a 7 year old being a master of anything, let alone a martial art. Everyone starts as a white belt in Jiu Jitsu and can earn their blue belt as early as 16. Most people who attend classes twice per week earn a new belt every 2-4 years, meaning your typical black belt has 10-20 years of experience training. While there are exceptions for exceptional students, jiu jitsu promotions are based on time training – not tests.
I need to get in shape before I sign up.
No. Sign up and get in shape. Most people burn 500-1,000 calories an hour while rolling.
